The number of artificial grass pitches in Spain has risen greatly in recent years, and there has been a great development in terms of the technologies used as well as the techniques and procedures for installing and constructing them. For this reason, bearing in mind the safety of footballers and seeking uniformity in terms of surfaces and their reaction to play, the Board of the RFEF, at their 9 July 2009 meeting, agreed an authorisation protocol with the Biomechanics Institute in Valencia. This protocol is based on a number of parameters that guarantee certain minimum safety requirements during play. This authorisation model will distinguish two levels of quality as regards artificial grass pitches, depending on the category of competition that is to be played on that field.
Since the 2009-10 season, the IBV has been the RFEF organisation in charge of the assessment of artificial grass pitches to be used for federation competitions in the different categories governed by the RFEF, as well as in those regional federations that have signed the agreement.
Turfgrass Artificial Grass, designed specially for playing football and seven-a-side football, meets all the requirements set by the Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Valencia Biomechanics Institute. After the recent inaugurations of new pitches in Valencia province, Turfgrass already has a number of football pitches that have passed all the tests and assessments they have been submitted to, in order to obtain the necessary approval to become official federation competition venues.
